Record ocean temperatures in April 2023

Hi everyone, I'm sure you've all heard about the alarming report on accelerating ocean warming that was published yesterday by The Guardian. It says that the Earth's oceans are heating up faster than ever before, and that this could have devastating consequences for the climate crisis, marine life and human health. The report is based on a study by more than 100 scientists from around the world, who analyzed data from more than 3,000 floats that measure ocean temperature, salinity and oxygen levels. They found that the oceans absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases since 1970, and that the rate of ocean warming has more than doubled since 1993. This is bad news for everyone who lives on this planet, because the oceans play a vital role in regulating the climate, weather patterns, food security and biodiversity. As the oceans warm up, they cause sea levels to rise, coral reefs to bleach, fish stocks to decline, storms to intensify and diseases ...

IPCC report on climate change 2023

Hi everyone, Today I want to share with you some insights from the latest IPCC report on climate change from March 2023. The IPCC is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of scientists and experts who assess the state of the climate and its impacts on humans and nature. The report is called AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023 and it summarizes the findings of three previous reports by different working groups. The report is very comprehensive and detailed, but I will try to highlight some key points that I think are important for everyone to know. Here they are: - The report confirms that human activities are the main cause of the observed warming of the atmosphere, ocean and land since the pre-industrial period. The global average temperature has increased by 1.1°C since then, and by 0.2°C per decade over the past 40 years. - The report warns that we are already experiencing the consequences of climate change, such as more frequent and intense heat waves, d...

How to Understand the IPCC's Figure SPM.1

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and potential future risks, and possible response options. The IPCC produces comprehensive Assessment Reports every six to seven years, as well as Special Reports on specific topics. The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is the latest and most comprehensive assessment of the state of knowledge on climate change. The AR6 consists of three Working Group reports and a Synthesis Report (SYR), which integrates the findings of the Working Group reports and the Special Reports. The SYR is written in a non-technical style suitable for policymakers and addresses a broad range of policy-relevant but policy-neutral questions. The Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the SYR provides a concise overview of the key messages and findings of the SYR. One of the most important figures in the SPM is Figure SPM.1, which shows how human activities have affected ...

The IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report: What You Need to Know

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and potential future risks, and possible response options. The IPCC produces comprehensive assessment reports every six to seven years that synthesize the latest knowledge on climate change from thousands of peer-reviewed publications. The IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) consists of four parts: three Working Group reports and a Synthesis Report. The Working Group reports cover the physical science basis of climate change (WG I), the impacts, adaptation and vulnerability to climate change (WG II), and the mitigation of climate change (WG III). The Synthesis Report integrates the findings of the Working Group reports and provides policymakers with a concise and accessible summary of the current state of knowledge and action options on climate change. The AR6 Synthesis Report was finalized in March 2023, following the approval of...

What is the IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report and why does it matter?

What is the IPCC AR6 Synthesis Report and why does it matter? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and potential future risks, and possible response options. The IPCC produces comprehensive assessment reports every six to seven years that summarize the current state of knowledge on climate change and its implications for society and the environment. The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is the latest and most comprehensive report by the IPCC, which consists of three Working Group contributions and a Synthesis Report. The Working Group I report, released in August 2021, focused on the physical science basis of climate change. The Working Group II report, released in February 2022, assessed the impacts, adaptation and vulnerability of human and natural systems to climate change. The Working Group III report, released in April 2022, examined the mitigation of climate change...
